Freshly baked Pastéis de Nata

The Portuguese egg tart, or Pastel de Nata, as it is called in Portuguese (Nata meaning cream), was up until recent years, a very low-profile pastry in the world of sweets. Being sold almost uniquely throughout Portugal (well it was created here…), Macau and in some Portuguese based bakeries around the world, for the most part of the outside world it was unknown. But all the sudden it all changed, and the little creamy tart mounted on a bed of crispy puff pastry is set to be as ubiquitous as the croissant, as Bloomberg recently called it on a recent article.

Local’s insight, where to get the best Portuguese egg tarts

Sure, you can google your way to the more famous bakeries that sell these delicacies, as the traditional Pastéis de Belém or the ones in Manteigaria (don´t get me wrong, these are great!), but if you clicked on the link you probably looking for those lesser known, secret local spots.

Deep in the historical part of Lisbon, close to São Jorge castle, Pastelaria Santo António has made a big entry into Lisbon egg tarts scene. Have just recently been awarded as the best Pastel de Nata in the city, on the 2019 Lisbon fish gastronomic festival (seems wrong right? But they do have the most famous Pastel de Nata competition).

Pastelaria Baga Baga, Graça

Ideally located at Graça center square, Baga Baga pastelaria may seem like another café among the huge offer that this neighborhood has. But we do invite you to take a step further and go in, among the huge selection of sweet and savory treats, there lies probably the best Pastel de Nata in the region.
